What Is Estrogen? Types, Functions, and How the Body Makes It

Estrogen is often described as a female hormone, but that label is too narrow. Estrogen is a group of hormones with important roles in reproduction, bone health, skin, the brain, body-fat distribution, and more. Women make much more estrogen than men do, but men make and use estrogen too.

If you want to understand symptoms, lab tests, or treatment options later, it helps to start with the basics: what estrogen is, which forms matter most, and how the body actually makes it.

Estrogen is a family of hormones

The three best-known estrogens are estradiol, estrone, and estriol.

  • Estradiol: the main estrogen during the reproductive years and the form most people mean when they talk about estrogen levels.
  • Estrone: a weaker estrogen that becomes more prominent after menopause.
  • Estriol: a weaker estrogen that rises substantially during pregnancy.

These hormones are related, but they do not behave in identical ways in every tissue.

How the body makes estrogen

Before menopause, the ovaries are the main source of estrogen. But they are not the only source. Adipose tissue can also synthesize estrogen[1]. That is one reason estrogen remains relevant outside the ovary and outside the reproductive system.

In both women and men, some estrogen is produced by converting androgens into estrogens through the aromatase enzyme. In other words, testosterone and androstenedione can be turned into estrogens in peripheral tissues[2]. The brain also has aromatase activity[3]. This conversion is one reason men have measurable estrogen levels even though they do not have ovaries.

What estrogen does in the body

Bone

Estrogen plays a central role in bone maintenance[4]. When estrogen falls, especially around menopause, bone turnover increases and bone loss accelerates. That is one reason postmenopausal women face a much higher risk of osteoporosis and fracture than younger women.

Brain and temperature regulation

Estradiol helps regulate thermoregulation and is one reason hot flashes become common during the menopause transition[5]. Estrogen also participates in broader brain signaling, although symptoms such as mood change or brain fog are influenced by many factors beyond one hormone alone.

Skin and connective tissue

Estrogen deficiency after menopause is associated with thinner, drier, less elastic skin[6]. That helps explain why some women notice sudden skin changes during midlife.

Vaginal and sexual health

Estrogen helps maintain vaginal tissue, lubrication, elasticity, and blood flow[7]. When levels fall, symptoms such as dryness, irritation, and pain with sex can become much more common.

Body-fat distribution

Estrogen also influences the way fat is stored and metabolized. Hormonal shifts do not explain every change in weight or waistline, but they are part of the picture.

How estrogen changes across life

Estrogen is not static. It changes across the menstrual cycle, rises sharply in pregnancy, and falls during the menopause transition. After menopause, ovarian production drops, but estrogen does not disappear completely because peripheral tissues still make some through aromatization.

This life-stage context matters. A lab value that is normal in a postmenopausal woman may look abnormal in a younger woman with regular cycles, and vice versa.

What estrogen means for men

Men need estrogen too. In men, estrogen contributes to bone health, aspects of libido, and feedback within the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Problems arise when the balance between testosterone and estradiol is disrupted, not because estrogen is inherently “bad.”

Conclusion

Estrogen is not one hormone with one job. It is a family of hormones that influence reproduction, bone, skin, temperature regulation, and sexual health. The ovaries are a major source before menopause, but adipose tissue and aromatase-driven conversion matter too. Understanding those basics makes later conversations about symptoms, testing, and treatment much easier.
