Semaglutide Injections: Revolutionizing Weight Loss in the Fight Against Obesity

Semaglutide is a prescription medicine that works in the body like a hormone and regulates appetite and blood sugar.  It is available in two forms.  Ozempic is available in a once-weekly injection to maintain blood sugar levels and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems, such as stroke and heart attack in Type 2 diabetes patients. Wegovy, a once-weekly injection for obesity is the other form of semaglutide.   With semaglutide injections, users have reported weight loss from 6 to 65 pounds over a six-month period.  Users of semaglutide have also seen an improvement in sleep apnea, lower blood pressure, and more stable blood sugar levels.

Semaglutide is usually only prescribed for patients with a 30 BMI body mass but is also prescribed for patients with a BMI of 27 if they have other underlying conditions, such as diabetes.  Semaglutide works by increasing production of the pancreas produced hormone insulin.  The manipulation of insulin production helps reduce hunger which causes patients to lose weight.  Producing more insulin actually lowers blood sugar levels in the body. Semaglutide seems to delay the movement of food through the stomach which leaves you feeling fuller longer  Since you are feeling fuller, you consume less calories.

Studies using patients taking either semaglutide or a placebo showed that patients on a dietary and exercise plan who were taking the medication lost between 15 to 20 percent of their body weight over a 68-week study.  Patients on a dietary and exercise plan who were taking the placebo only lost 2.4 percent of their body weight.  One down side of the medicine is that many of the people regained their lost weight when they stopped taking semaglutide.  The study group that kept taking the drug lost another 10% of their body weight.  Semaglutide can have negative side effects in some patients.  These temporary side effects can include nausea and diarrhea.

Taking semaglutide can result in rapid weight loss which sounds great; however, rapid weight loss can cause some problems of its own.  “Ozempic finger” and “Wegovy butt” are two new terms being used to describe side effects of taking semaglutide for weight loss.  Women say that their rings now fall off their fingers, or that their butts have become flat and saggy.  When using a weight loss product, you can’t pick and choose where the lost weight will come from.  Some women have found that they lost a lot of weight in their faces, causing a gaunt hollowed-out look which made them look older.  Having wrinkled, sagging skin on the face has coined a new word, “Ozempic face,” on social media.  It is thought that drinking more water and consuming more protein might help curb the negative results of semaglutide.  This is another important reason to commit to a healthy dietary regimen and a comprehensive and multi-faceted exercise plan before deciding to take semaglutide.  If you are carrying so much weight that weight loss is going to inevitably cause sagging skin, then speak with a plastic surgeon before you start semaglutide.  Plastic surgery techniques have evolved so much over the years, and they  can help prepare you for what lies ahead for your body.   Better to use skin tightening surgeries than it is to live with all of the health risks that come from carrying too much weight.  Obesity shortens your life and increases your risk of heart disease, stroke, heart attack, joint issues, diabetes, high blood pressure, and fatty liver disease.  These are only a few of the downsides to obesity.

When considering if semaglutide is something you would like to consider, understand that you need to speak with a trained health care professional as you would before stating any new treatment plan or before starting any new medication.  It’s also important to know that without  dietary and exercise plans, patients would not have lost the number of pounds that they lost when taking semaglutide.  Semaglutide isn’t a magic medicine that will melt away pounds unless you choose to lead a healthier lifestyle. Living a healthier lifestyle will help you fight obesity which is a disease.  Remember obesity decreases both the quality of your life and the length of your life.  Weight loss, even when it begins later in life, curtails many obesity-related risk factors.  Research show that losing as little as 5 to 10 percent of body weight gives meaningful health benefits to people who suffer from obesity.
